Description
Since 2018, the Capital Kiwi Project has been working alongside locals, iwi, landowners, and Wellington City Council to transform the hills surrounding our capital into a safe haven where kiwi can thrive in the wild. This 23,000-hectare area stretches from Red Rocks in the south, through Mākara and Ōhariu Valley, to Whitireia Park in the north — a landscape roughly the size of Abel Tasman National Park.
Kiwi are remarkably tough and resilient. With predator threats managed to safe levels due to landscape-scale predator control, the vision is to see this national icon and taonga return to the trails, reserves, and paddocks of Pōneke.
Since 2022, more than 200+ kiwi have been translocated in over a dozen releases, and are now free-ranging in the hills west of Mākara. After being absent from the area for over 150 years, they are now home again.
