In the dappled light of the forest, few birds command attention quite like the Tūī. With feathers that shimmer like oil on water and a voice that dances between robotic clicks and operatic trills, they’re nature’s contradiction; equal parts beauty and belligerence.

Spend a moment watching them, and you’ll see it: the glint of mischief in their eye, the puffed chest, the relentless chase. Tūī are nectar junkies, fiercely protective of their sugary stash. Woe betide the unsuspecting visitor; be it a silvereye, bellbird, or even another Tūī, who dares to sip from their chosen flower. Those sharp claws and sharper tempers make quick work of intruders.

But beneath the bravado lies a surprising hero. When the forest hushes and the shadow of a Karearea New Zealand Falcon sweeps across the canopy, it’s the Tūī who sounds the alarm. Like sentinels, they rise to the tallest branches, calling out in chorus, rallying others to take flight. Their cries pierce the silence, a warning to the Kererū and Kākā below, too busy munching to notice the danger.

And just like that, the grumpy guardian becomes the forest’s first line of defence – loud, proud, and utterly indispensable. Love them or fear them, the Tūī is never far from the action, always ready to stir the pot or save the day.
